The 2017/18 Absa Premier League season has been nothing short of enthralling. With teams jostling for position in the standings, it's been a roller coaster ride of highs and lows. As we reach the business end of the season, the league table is starting to take shape with teams battling it out to finish in the top half or make the playoffs. The log table is currently headed by Mamelodi Sundowns, who have been a powerhouse this season. They have been consistently in the top three since day one and are currently on top with their impressive 50 points from 28 games. Kaizer Chiefs have been hot on their heels all season, but their recent drop in form has seen them slip to second place, 5 points behind Sundowns. Bidvest Wits have also been in contention, with the club currently sitting in third with 43 points from 27 games.
Orlando Pirates are fighting for fourth place with 35 points from 28 games, while Chippa United occupy fifth with 31 points. Bloemfontein Celtic, AmaZulu, Baroka FC, Free State Stars, SuperSport United and Ajax Cape Town are all within reach of the top five, and will be hoping to climb up the table as the season draws to a close.
At the other end of the table, things look a little bleaker. Platinum Stars, who have been mired in the relegation zone all season, are rooted to the bottom of the table with just 11 points from 28 matches. Jomo Cosmos and Maritzburg United aren't faring much better, with Cosmos on 17 points and United on 18 points from 28 matches.
It's clear that the current log table is an accurate reflection of the performance of each team this season. While some teams have cemented their place in the top five, there is still a lot to play for in the last few weeks of the season. With teams fighting for survival, it will be interesting to see how the table shapes up come the final whistle.
