Maine Booster Seat Law

Maine is known for its beautiful mountain views, scenic coastline, and friendly people. But it’s also a place where safety laws are taken seriously. With a recent updated booster seat law, Maine is making sure that the state’s youngest passengers are riding safely in their vehicles.

The current Maine Booster Seat Law requires children to ride in a booster seat until they are at least 8 years old or 4 feet 9 inches tall. The law was recently updated to keep up with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) guidelines. As of January 2021, anyone who fails to comply with the law can face a fine of up to $50.

To ensure that motorists are aware of these changes and understand the importance of using a booster seat, the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety has created an educational campaign. This campaign focuses on informing drivers of the updated law and why it is important to properly secure children in their vehicles. The campaign also provides information on how to correctly use a booster seat, including installation instructions and tips for proper fit.

The updated law is also in line with the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommendation that children should remain in a booster seat until they are at least 8 years old or 4 feet 9 inches tall. This age range is when a child is tall enough and mature enough to properly use a vehicle's seat belt. Until then, a booster seat is necessary to ensure the seat belt fits correctly and provides optimal protection for the child.

In addition to the educational campaign, the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety has taken additional steps to ensure that motorists understand the importance of using a booster seat and the consequences of not doing so. All police officers in Maine have been trained to enforce the law and are issuing warnings and fines to those who fail to comply.

The updated law also requires all car rental agencies in the state to provide booster seats upon request. This makes it easier for parents and caregivers to travel with children in compliance with the law.

The updated booster seat law is just one of the many measures that Maine is taking to keep its youngest passengers safe. By taking action to educate and enforce the law, the state is making sure that everyone is aware of the requirements and is doing their part to protect children while on the road.
