Metalloids are a relatively unknown group of elements on the periodic table, but they play an important role in the chemistry of the elements and compounds that make up the world around us. They’re located in a very specific place on the periodic table, and understanding where they sit can help us better understand their properties and how they interact with other elements. Here we’ll take a look at what metalloids are, where they’re located on the periodic table, and why they’re important.
Metalloids are elements that have both metallic and non-metallic properties. While they may resemble metals, they don’t have all the same properties as metals do. On the periodic table, they’re marked with a dark grey box and are located between the metals and the non-metals. This places them in a unique position and allows them to play a special role in chemical reactions and the structure of compounds. Common metalloids include silicon, arsenic, boron, germanium, antimony, and tellurium.
The metalloids are located between groups 13 - 16 and groups 3 - 12 on the periodic table. This makes them the only elements that straddle the boundary between the metals and the non-metals. This location gives them some unique properties, as they’re able to combine with both metals and non-metals in different ways. For example, silicon is used for both semiconductor devices and for glass production. Its ability to mix with both metals and non-metals makes it a versatile element.
